Podhlavický mill welcomes you to a picturesque corner of Českodubsko, an area rich in history and beautiful natural scenery. Our boutique hotel was built from an original mill that has stood here since the early 17th century. With love and respect for history, elements of the original mill have been combined with the needs of today. The result is unique spaces that guarantee you unforgettable moments of relaxation with a feeling of luxury and rest.
History
The existence of the Podhlavický mill was documented by written records as early as 1607. Therefore, the mill was established at the end of the 16th century and was linked to the homestead No. 15 in Hlavice. It was a rustic mill.
During the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), the building disappeared and was not rebuilt until 1713 and was subsequently registered among the manor mills. This phase includes the oldest part of the surviving building, namely the masonry of the waterwheel fridge and the associated drainage channel. The remainder of the building was most likely predominantly timber-framed storey, like its earlier predecessor. The earliest outbuildings surrounding the yard were also timber-framed - a barn with a storey chamber attached to the mill, a barn and pigsties. The present-day ground floor of the mill dates back to the classical reconstruction of 1838-1839.
The impulse for the reconstruction was a previous fire in 1830 and a property transaction six years later, when the Pytloun family was succeeded by the Štancík family, who farmed the mill until the 20th century. The reconstruction in 1892 is decisive for the overall appearance of the mill, its material design, construction and details, which is documented by archival sources, the extinct date on the front gable and especially by dendrochronological analysis. Further minor alterations were probably carried out in 1919 (alterations to the façade, interior of the living area), and especially during the 1920s.
THE LAST MILLERS OF PODHLAVICE
The technological equipment and the last reconstruction of the mill date back to 1925-1926, when the waterworks were significantly modified and the water wheel for the upper water was replaced by a Francis turbine placed in a new turbine house directly in the mill.
Chamomile - the heart of Podhlavice mill
Chamomile. This medicinal plant is at the heart of the atmosphere and the whole philosophy of Podhlavice mill. Its history in our country dates back to the 1930s, when it began to be grown specifically for Prague pharmacies. We would like to continue this tradition on our chamomile farm very soon.
Chamomile also plays a key role in our restaurant. It brings its subtle aroma and sophisticated flavour to our dishes, enriching the menu with unique culinary experiences. It is also an integral part of our signature drinks, which can accompany you in various forms throughout the mill.
